Dr. Cheong has been practising Dermatology since 1986 in various hospitals including the National Skin Centre in Singapore, and in the St John’s Dermatology Centre in London before going into private practice at the Specialist Skin Clinic in 1995. He trained at the St John’s Dermatology Centre, London in cutaneous photobiology, (the study of biological effects of sunlight on the skin) and phototherapy (the use of ultraviolet radiation to treat skin conditions).
Besides treating general skin problems in both children and adults, he has special interest and expertise in the treatment of psoriasis, acne and acne scars and the use of ultraviolet radiation (phototherapy) for treating skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and vitiligo. He has also undergone training and worked in the field of sexually transmitted infections in London.
Dr Cheong is experienced with the use of various lasers and IPL for treating acne, acne scars, pigment problems such as freckles and age spots and removal of tattoos and birthmarks as well as Exilis® for non-invasive face lift.
He is a past President of the Dermatological Society of Singapore (2000 – 2005).
He co-chaired the Asian expert forum on the diagnosis and management of seborrhoeic dermatitis in 2014 and 2015 which resulted in the publication of a consensus guide on treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis in Asia. He was also a key member of the Asia Pacific Dermatitis and Acne Leaders’ Summit, a regular meeting of key opinion leaders in the region in 2015/16.
Dr Cheong lectures extensively on acne, atopic dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and other skin conditions like pigment disorders and the use of dermocosmetics in dermatology both locally and regionally. He is a regularly invited speaker at regional dermatological conferences. He spoke on ‘New generation moisturisers’ at the 24th World Congress of Dermatology Milan 2019. And more recently, at the 25th World Congress of Dermatology, Singapore 2023 on ‘Integrated care in paediatric eczematous dermatitis and dry sensitive skin’.
Dr Cheong has conducted advanced acne workshops for dermatologists and general practitioners in the region including Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore in addition to regional speaking programmes on acne, atopic dermatitis and seborrhoeic dermatitis. He has also conducted workshops on the use of biologics in psoriasis for local dermatologists. In the last few years, he has been actively involved in sharing his experiences using newer treatments such as biologics for psoriasis with the local specialists.
